INTRODUCCIÓN A LA POESÍA

Les pido que cojan el poema

y lo sostengan con fuerza frente a la luz

como una diapositiva a color

o que peguen una oreja contra su colmena.

Les digo que dejen caer un ratón dentro del poema

y observan cómo trata de hallar una salida,

o que entren a la habitación del poema

y a tientas busquen el interruptor de la luz.

Quiero que hagan esquí acuático

sobre la superficie de un poema

despidiéndose del nombre del autor en la orilla.

Pero ellos todo lo que desean

es atar el poema a una silla con una soga

y torturarlo hasta que confiese.

Empiezan a golpearlo con una manguera

para descubrir su auténtico significado.

INTRODUCTION TO POETRY 

I ask them to take a poem

and hold it up to the light

like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem

and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem's room

and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski

across the surface of a poem

waving at the author's name on the shore.

But all they want to do

is tie the poem to a chair with rope

and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose

to find out what it really means.
